Applied Canine Ethology based consulting, coaching, and training utilizes balanced training techniques inspired by the work of Ian Dunbar and Kim Brophy. This approach is minimally aversive and rewards-based, featuring an individualized training plan tailored specifically to your pup and your household.
The primary goal for most family dogs is to navigate social situations in a calm, attentive, and polite manner. We emphasize preventing dangerous, destructive, or rude behaviors through our canine behavior consultancy. A harmonious home begins with selecting a compatible breed that aligns with your lifestyle, which is why we offer breed consultations at no charge. Our methods reflect this philosophy. By investing time upfront with an individualized training plan, you can prevent the need for costly behavior modification down the line.
What is Applied Ethology? A corollary is Natural Horsemanship. It is the application of canine ethology (evolutionary anthropology and evolutionary biology) to the human-canine relationship.
Our written Individualized Behavior Plan includes 2 hours of one-on-one coaching via Zoom, FaceTime, or phone, utilizing balanced training techniques tailored to your dog's needs. This service is part of our canine behavior consultancy, ensuring you receive personalized guidance for implementing your individualized training plans.

The intake process for our canine behavior consultancy begins with: 1) a complimentary phone or Zoom consultation, 2) your completion of my questionnaire, 3) scheduling an in-home observation, and then 4) commencing in-home sessions that will progress to walks around your neighborhood and other high-distraction areas. We recommend using balanced training techniques with sessions 2 to 3 times a week, gradually reducing to once a week as we implement your individualized training plans, as agreed or needed.

In a one-and-a-half-hour session in high-distraction areas that you or your dog frequently visit, we will address common issues such as leash pulling and ensuring reliable recall. These sessions employ balanced training techniques and include an individualized training plan with personalized activities like fetch or frisbee, tailored to meet both your interests and those of your pup. Additionally, our canine behavior consultancy will ensure that the training is effective and enjoyable for both you and your dog.

Comprehensive canine behavior consultancy (utilizing Applied Ethology) -- sessions designed to address issues such as counter surfing, jumping on you or guests, door manners, door rushing, and leash reactivity through balanced training techniques. Applied Ethology uses insights from evolutionary anthropology and evolutionary biology to create individualized training plans that resolve or reduce difficulties in your pup's behavior. A corollary to this approach is Natural Horsemanship.

Our extensive off-leash training utilizes balanced training techniques that prioritize developing reliable recall. We also prepare dogs for various activities such as running alongside a bicycle, hiking, kayaking, riding in a side-by-side or four-wheeler, and boating. These training sessions are specifically tailored for dogs who do not exhibit aggression, leash, or fear reactivity. Should any of these issues arise, they can be effectively addressed through our canine behavior consultancy and customized individualized training plans.

Catch them BEFORE they fall! An Individualized Puppy Training and Welfare Plan (utilizing Applied Ethology) focusing on social skills and basic obedience can help avoid the need for remediation and behavior modification later in an adult dog's life. By investing time on the front end, you can prevent most canine behavior issues down the line.
